GINGIVITIS 101

Gingivitis is a common dental concern across the nation. It is the first stage in periodontal disease, yet many people do not realize they have gingivitis near Belmont. Without correcting gingivitis, people may need painful teeth cleanings, root canal treatments, or tooth extractions.

As seen in the short video, signs of gingivitis include red or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, and bad breath. These are all caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth. These bacteria can eventually form under the gum line to cause infections and destroy supporting tissue. As tissue is destroyed, the gums begin to recede and infections may affect the tooth, causing the potential need for root canal treatment. Gingivitis can be reversed, though. With dental exams, cleanings, and consistent brushing and flossing, many patients notice gingivitis symptoms disappear within a few days or weeks.
