Tips to Prevent Tooth Enamel Loss by Belmont Dental Group

Belmont Dental Group wants you to enjoy having a beautiful smile, and doing so involves taking care of your enamel. Enamel is the tough outer layer covering each tooth, and is the hardest substance your body produces. This protects the inner layers from bacteria and acid. If acid eats through your enamel, you begin to have a cavity that threatens your oral health. Acid wear can come from bacteria, sugary and starchy foods, and sugary drinks. This erosion may lead to cracks, chips, and indentations in your teeth. Enamel erosion may also cause increased sensitivity to temperature, texture, or taste. Here are a few suggestions on how to prevent tooth enamel loss in your daily life.

Maintain a Healthy Diet – A sugary and acidic diet creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow and damage your enamel. This includes foods like candies, desserts, soft drinks, citrus juices, excessive alcohol, and general snacking between meals. While it would be impossible to suggest fully cutting out your favorite sweets and guilty pleasure snacks (we don’t even want to cut out chocolate chip cookies from our life forever), we do recommend being aware of when you’re snacking. Next time you’re hungry, take the opportunity to replace a sugary snack with a snack that will benefit your enamel. This includes lean proteins, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and water to keep you hydrated.

Use Fluoridating Products – You can help maintain your tooth enamel with products that re-mineralize your teeth, strengthen them, and prevent cavities. The easiest way to do this is to integrate toothpaste, mouthwash, and mouth rinse that contain fluoride. You should check the packaging next time you’re out shopping, and see if your favorite brands have enamel repairing products. Some of our favorites are Sensodyne Pronamel toothpaste and mouthwash, Crest Pro-Health Advance toothpaste, and ACT Total Care Anticavity Fluoride mouthwash. Additionally, most tap water has fluoride added to it, so be sure to drink plenty of it!

Stay on Top of Your Dental Hygiene – Preserving your enamel involves making daily choices about habits and hygiene. These choices are in your control, including a proper dental care routine. You can prevent enamel loss and keep your teeth healthy by brushing twice a day, flossing at least once daily, and using fluoridated products like the ones mentioned above. Be sure to keep your dental appointments every six months to address oral issues and fix them before they develop into long-term damage.

Your tooth enamel is one of your mouth’s most effective ways to protect your teeth, so take good care of it with healthy habits and regular dental care.
